Eric Holder: Pakistani Taliban Behind Times Sq. Plot

Today on This Week, Attorney General Eric Holder admits that the Pakistani Taliban is behind Faisal Shahzad’s failed Times Square car bomb attack. 

The New York Times: […]“We’ve now developed evidence that shows the Pakistani Taliban was behind the attack,” Attorney GeneralEric Holder said in an interview on ABC television’s news program “This Week.”

Later, appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he said theTaliban in Pakistan “directed this plot” and may have also financed it. The Pakistani Taliban, he said, was “intimately involved” in the attempt on May 1 by Faisal Shahzad, an American citizen of Pakistani descent, to blow up gasoline and propane tanks secreted inside a Nissan Pathfinder parked on West 45th Street just yards from the heart of Times Square.

It seems pretty obvious that Faisal Shahzad would have had some Pakistani Taliban connections. The video put up on YouTube the day after the failed attack was clue number one. Why authorities so quickly dismissed it is a mystery to me. Shahzad’s cash flow should have been another clue. He was not able to pay his mortgage, yet he had the money to pay for the Pathfinder with cash and buy a one-way ticket to Dubai.  Someone must have been helping him then.

Just given these two facts, why is it so many officials were so quick to assert that Faisal Shahzad was a “lone wolf”.  It seems like “lone wolf” is the automatic default position whenever these jihadists strike.

When it comes to fighting terror, it is almost like this administration wants to will their political beliefs to life. They want to believe that there is no war on terror and simply take actions like that were true. However, reality keeps asserting itself and then they are forced to deal with the obvious … Al Qaeda and the Taliban are still at war with us.

Reporter finds Faisal Shahzad’s personal documents

How is it possible that a news reporter is able to find Faisal Shahzad’s personal documents discarded outside Shahzard’s home before the FBI and Homeland Security? 

SHELTON -- Faisal Shahzad's Pakistani passport, tax documents, greeting cards, academic records and immigration documents were found abandoned outside a Shelton home once owned by the man charged in the attempted Times Square car bombing.

The documents, mainly from 2000 and 2001, were found Tuesday morning by a Connecticut Post reporter outside the house at 119 Long Hill Ave. where Shahzad lived until about a year ago. The house is vacant and up for sale.

Police earlier had searched the property, according to neighbors. [MORE]

Our anti-terrorism forces had better start getting on the ball. All these slip ups are going to cost us dearly. While, such sloppy work was tolerated before 9/11, there really should be little excuse for missing things like this

Time Square Car Bomb suspect Faisal Shahzad and the Miranda question

After the early morning arrest of the Time Square car bomb suspect, Faisal Shahzad, more details are coming in [see this morning’s earlier post].  This New York Post video provides a quick recap.

The media seems to be paying close attention to the fact that Faisal Shahzad is a naturalized U.S. citizen. Shahzad being a naturalized U.S. Citizen does raise the Miranda Rights issue once again. John McCain has already spoken up on this topic.

"Obviously that would be a serious mistake...at least until we find out as much information we have," McCain said during an appearance on "Imus in the Morning" when asked whether the suspect, 30-year-old Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized American citizen from Pakistan.

"Don't give this guy his Miranda rights until we find out what it's all about," McCain added.[...]

"There's probably about 350 different charges he's guilty off -- attempted acts of terror against the united States, attempted murder," said McCain, cautioning that he's not privy to the charges with which Shahzad might be charged. "I'm sure there's a significant number to warrant the death penalty."

Even though Shahzad is claiming he acted alone in the attack, McCain might be out of luck here. Shahzad is a naturalized U.S. citizen and unlike the Underpants Bomber, Shahzad actually does have our Constitutional rights.  The left is already beating back McCain’s comments (see these Memeorandum discussions here and here).
