Distasteful: Columbia University students heckle wounded vet

New York Post: Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus.
"Racist!" some students yelled at Anthony Maschek, a Columbia freshman and former Army staff sergeant awarded the Purple Heart after being shot 11 times in a firefight in northern Iraq in February 2008. Others hissed and booed the veteran.
Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday at the meeting to issue an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military. [...]
Several students laughed and jeered the Idaho native, a 10th Mountain Division infantryman who spent two years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington recovering from grievous wounds.
Maschek, who is studying economics, miraculously survived the insurgent attack in Kirkuk. In the hail of gunfire, he broke both legs and suffered wounds to his abdomen, arm and chest.
He enrolled last August at the Ivy League school, where an increasingly ugly battle is unfolding over the 42-year military ban there.

American universities are becoming a real hot bed of fascism. College is suppose to be a place to expand your thinking by engaging in open debate and dialogue, but more and more American universities simply deal in knee jerk politically correct intolerant thinking.

When I was in college and there were speakers I disagreed with, I usually just skipped the event.  My thinking was that low attendance was the best way to show disapproval.  If it was a subject I was passionate about and I disagreed with the speaker, I would attend with hopes of asking challenging questions.  The idea of shouting down speakers seemed so...high school to me.

I find it funny that Columbia found it far less controversial inviting Ahmadinejad to speak, than they do about removing a ROTC ban.  The real thing going on here is that the liberals at Columbia are just plain old reflexively anti-military. Anything military is evil, therefore heckling a wounded vet seems like a  natural thing to them.

Now that conservatives are awake and taking back the country, I think it is time we start taking back education from the tired old radical who have been stinking up universities all across America.

I am in 100% agreement with you. We need to get more conservatives into the education field and get more people involved with running for local school boards.

The far left progressives are targeting our children and we can't let them.

These miscreants at the university are taught this drivel from their miscreant professors. Such an ideology pays lip service to the ideals of compassion and tolerance only when it suits its political agenda. Any dissenters are branded as heretics of the worst kind. In earlier days, these students would have been first in line to light the bonfires to burn the heretics.

I heard this from someone who had been in Columbia for a long while, purely rumor and speculative with no evidence whatsoever: in the last few years, Columbia had really lowered their standard and accepts anyone outside USA as long as they have cash to pay for their high tuition, as well as a reasonably good grade to pass exams.

Now, in most none-western nations, those who have money to send their kids to Columbia are often very rich and extremely powerful.

And obviously, their wealth was a result of tyranny and extortion, which is something very different from the American system [although socialists try to move us toward that way].

It's not hard to imagine their kids, who had all the benefits from the tyrannical countries, to have an extreme dislike [and jealousy] of USA.

Or they were students paid by the governments, fully expecting them to return home and return the favor to work for them.

As a result, you are getting a bunch of people from countries that are very hostile of the American system, or the kids of such tyrannical government officials, gathered in Columbia.

NYU is going south in some ways, but at least they have standards regarding the students they accept.

And that is why Columbia is a stinking shithole that invited the Iranian dictator.

Not to say other schools are doing any better, but I am not surprised at how low Columbia had, and will, go.

Conservatives also need to get their hands on pop culture too. That is another avenue tired lefties have dominated for too long.

Hey, long time no see. Hope all is well.

"Such an ideology pays lip service to the ideals of compassion and tolerance only when it suits its political agenda."

Sadly, these young college students cannot see this.

Very nice insight into Columbia. I remember back in high school wanting to go to Columbia. It was one of my dream colleges. I was even willing to go into massive debt to attend. After spending one day visiting the campus, I was completely cured of going to Columbia. To be very blunt, I found it to be a straight up asshole factory (much like Wall Street).

That or live in a country where the military is really as awful as they imagine America's to be.

I work for a University in the heartland and I am fearful that this ideology is filtering our way. We do have an active ROTC, but I am not sure how much longer. It wasn't that long ago, that we honored veterans and encouraged them to attend our universities. I am ashamed for Columbia.
