Fox News: Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., raised a combined total of $2.2 million in the first quarter of 2011, outgaining presumed presidential contender Mitt Romney who raised $1.9 million over the same period.Bachmann's political action committee, MichelePAC, raised $500,000 while her Congressional reelection fund took in $1.7 million. The funds raised for her Congressional reelection could be transferred to any federal campaign, including one for president. [MORE]
That is pretty damn impressive. Bachmann made the money from mostly small donors and that means votes. If people are willing to give you their money, then they are just as willing to give you their votes.
I think in 2012, the true conservative candidates will have no problem attracting small donors. This is because the base is clamoring for the real deal and not another establishment type. If the conservative base coalesces around one conservative candidate, then big donors or not it is bye-bye Mitt.

I love her and want to have babies with her, but she won't beat Obama.
Pawlenty announced recently. He's got about as much chance as Mitt, and both are far ahead of all other contenders.
Scalia just got into a car accident. He's OK, but imagine if he had been killed.
That singular event should give you pause. Scalia and Kennedy both turn 75 this year - two more pauses.
Do you really, really want to give Obama two more SCOTUS choices? If so, give your money and your vote to Bachman. I don't care which Republican wins as long as 1) he or she wins, and 2) will appoint two conservative justices. I don't care what bailouts or health care plans they voted for. I don't care whether they support gay marriage. I don't care if they raise my taxes (at least in the short run). At this point, nothing else in politics matters more than that one vote of the Supreme Court- nothing at all.
Take a look at how ONE leftist county judge stopped Wisconsin Republicans in their tracks, temporarily, with one frivolous ruling. Look at how Kagan and Sotomayor are voting.
Bachman's been a congressman for only 5 years. She is just not seasoned enough. Do we really want to make the same mistake the Democrats did with My Hero, Zero? Do we really want to start losing independents just after gaining their votes?
The Senate is ours for the taking. Obama is vulnerable. But recall Kemp, Dole, McCain, GHW Bush - all supremely qualified for the job but not good campaigners. Romney can campaign. I hope Pawlenty can.
My glorious hope is that this bright woman KNOWS she can't win, and she's preparing to throw her support behind a strong candidate. But because she is a polarizing figure, she needs to finesse that power. I don't think she knows how to do that. She needs to rally the base, not alienate the middle.
Rubio looked and sounded really great this week, but he's smart enough to know he's not ready. The intra-party infighting has GOT to stop until after 2012! The Tea Party is going bananas. You don't try to run the country with only one-third of the lawmaking power.
please, please, please pick her, it would make the race, at least, entertaining. i mean give us our circus we so greatly deserve. because in the end it does not matter who wins. we're too deep in the shiaat to ever pull ourselves out. we might as well be entertained while sinking. oh...lol cats too
ref n: reasoned but short on appreciating the dynamics of unfolding events and a focused campaign; the first a known unknown, the second am willing to give a serious candidate a shot
ref some of abc's previous posts/commentary on such - no mr or his ilk - wholly untrustworthy w/ far more potential to do damage than we imagine; e.g., blame bho on gwb - we went from "socialist lite" to marism full-bore because the left's appetite for power is insatiable and gwb gave them way too much political turf by making nice and funneling money to their constituencies
Nick, sorry but you're full of crap.
Since when did we let the media and the Democrats -- but I repeat myself -- tell us who to nominate.
We have had ENOUGH wishy-washy "centrists".
MICHELE BACHMANN FOR PRESIDENT 2012.
She can win. In a landslide.
Just like Reagan, who was derided as a kook, stupid and an actor.
Don't listen to the pundits, eggheads and goofballs.
Listen to your heart.
Nick:
I understand that we simply cannot afford another term of Obama. However, simply going with whomever we think might win will may give us a second Obama term, only with a Republican at the helm.
America is perilously close to going over the edge and some very drastic and unpopular things must be done to right the ship.
Mousy and politically calculating men like Pawlenty and Mitt simply will not do. Ask yourself honestly would either of those guys sacrifice a second term in order to make sure America survived? I just don't get that from them.
Jamie Robinson:
Circus? I cannot imagine her any worse than the leftist bozos who piled trillions on to the debt and now don't want to do anything about it.
Thanks Clifton. Again, I don't want to sound like a Romney (or Pawlenty) cheerleader. I think Bush was an average leader at a time when we needed superior leadership. He was poorly equipped to carry the conservative banner. But he made several great picks for the SCOTUS.
If the important decisions were routinely going 7-2 or 6-3 in our favor, I'd be less worried. But there are too many 5-4s and Kennedy is getting very old. We can't even count on him 100% of the time, while Breyer, Sotomayor, Ginsberg, and Kagan vote as a block.
Ask yourself and then answer: if MR had beaten McCain and then Obama, do you think he would have picked justices as bad as Sotomayor and Kagan? If MR were president, do you think he would have signed the health care bill, ARRA, and Dodd-Frank? I don't believe so.
Do I entirely trust MR? No. I didn't trust McCain or Bush either, but they all got my votes. Character and experience are in short supply these days.
I wish we had cultivated young talent for the past decade, but we didn't. So all I can say is that I said my piece and we'll see what happens. Any Republican who wins the nomination will have my full support, and I wish Michelle the best.
As for anyone who thinks Bachman will "win in a landslide," I think it's time for your meds. At best, it will be a close race.
The Census shifted some electoral votes our way, but there are still a lot of powerful swing states. I think we've lost Colorado for at least a decade, and perhaps Iowa and New Mexico too. Ohio is fickle and Wisconsin generally solid Dem. Florida was too close to put in our column permanently. If Obama wins Florida and Ohio, he locks up the election. If he keeps Colorado, Iowa, and two of NM, MN, WI, or MI, he wins.
Enthusiasm can't trump electoral math! In 2008, Obama only had to win all of John Kerry's states plus Ohio to win. When he won Ohio, I turned off my TV. The rest was gravy.
I think you all really need to do the political math on the national scoreboard and realize this is Obama's election to lose. And with the economy improving, nothing other than a strong, widely acceptable Republican can beat Obama.
if you can show me the math of how Bachman wins, I'll change my mind. I don't even think she'll take her home state.
