Shutdown Averted! Historic Spending Cuts?

Politico: After a long day of trading offers, the White House and House Republicans reached agreement Friday night on a budget framework that would cap 2011 appropriations near or below $1.050 trillion while cutting domestic and foreign aid by more than $40 billion from the rate of spending at the beginning of this Congress.

Behind the closed doors of special meeting of the Republican Conference, Speaker John Boehner presented the package to his party as at least an agreement in principle and said at one point: “We have a deal.” The Senate should now feel confident enough to move ahead with a stop gap spending bill to avert—or at least shorten—any shutdown beginning at midnight.

In a joint statement with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Friday night, Boehner announced: “We have agreed to an historic amount of cuts for the remainder of this fiscal year, as well as a short-term bridge that will give us time to avoid a shutdown while we get that agreement through both houses and to the president.”

Speaking on national television with the Washington Monument as a backdrop, President Barack Obama announced the deal shortly after 11 p.m. [MORE]

I just cannot believe how these bozos pat themselves on the back for not spending $40 billion dollars more of borrowed money and then have the brass to call that historic!

What exactly did Weepy Willow Boehner get out of this deal anyway? The riders for Planned Parenthood and the EPA were scrapped, and whatever spending cuts he got are still woefully inadequate for saving the nation from a debt crisis. Weepy Willow even allowed Obama to escape the funding the troops trap!

If Republican want to have any hope of enacting anything remotely similar to Ryan's budget proposal, it is very clear that tougher, bolder and braver leadership will be required. Boehner simply isn't up to the task.

Harry Reid and Lindsey Graham want to do something about Quran Burning

Harry Reid and RINO Lindsey Graham are feeling compelled to do something about Quran burning in America. Both were on with CBS Face The Nation and they expressed their concern to Bob Schieffer. First up Harry Reid.

Politico: "Ten to 20 people have been killed," Reid said on "Face the Nation," but refused to say flat-out that the Senate would pass a resolution condemning pastor Terry Jones.

"We’ll take a look at this of course...as to whether we need hearings or not, I don’t know," he added.

Not to be outdone with showing concern, RINO Graham had this jaw dropper.

Let us first keep in mind that both of these bozos are completely incapable of resolving America's most pressing issues like our $14 trillion worth of debt, three wars and an economy that is being propped up with funny money. The idea that they can add more to their plate is beyond absurd.

Even if these two clowns were somehow able to solves those pressing issues, exactly what kind of action are they talking about? Graham's ‘Freedom of speech is a great idea but we're at war" line should chill us all to the bone. Is Graham suggesting that under certain circumstances Congress will just curtail one of our most important inalienable rights?

The other thing we should talk about is appeasement. While Reid and Graham believe they are doing the noble thing by standing against religious hate speech, they don't seem to realize that in doing so they are trying to appease a violent culture. If those Afghanis did not go on a murdering rampage, would Graham or Reid even be concerned?

Burning a Quran in America might be an ugly thing to do, but it is a Constitutionally protected thing to do. Just because it drives people on the other side of the globe to murder, doesn't mean we should change our way of life. Heck, what happens when these lunatics start cutting up because our women won't wear the burka, would Reid and Graham look into that too?

The better thing to do would be to tell the entire Middle East to grow up already! That's right, grow up! This is 2011 and cutting off heads, stoning women, and murdering people you disagree with is both primitive and barbaric. There is just no need for Western civilization to appease such evil behavior.

Rand Paul one ups Harry Reid

LOL! It looks like Rand Paul must have caught old Harry Reid daydreaming about cowboy poets!

National Review: Washington — Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), a Tea Party favorite, has boxed Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) into a corner. After a quiet day of quorum calls and speeches, Reid abruptly adjourned the upper chamber Thursday and postponed votes until Monday. According to numerous Hill staffers, Paul deserves some credit for the impasse.

Here’s the back story: On Wednesday, Paul, with little notice, attached an amendment to the small-business re-authorization bill. The amendment, which chastises President Obama for his actions in Libya, urges members to adopt the president’s own words as “the sense of the Senate.”

To make his point, Paul quoted, in the legislative language, from Obama’s 2007 remarks on the subject: “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.” According to Paul’s office, “the measure aims to put the Senate on record affirming Congress as the body with constitutional authority on matters of war.”

GOP sources tell National Review Online that Paul’s proposal flummoxed Reid, who does not want his members to have to weigh in on Obama’s dusty quote about congressional authority, even if the vote is only to table the measure. [MORE]

I consider this principle trumping politics. Reid and most of the Senate Democrats would not have found themselves in this pickle if they were principled individuals rather than conniving party hacks. Even Obama's 2007 remarks was all about opposing everything George Bush did, than a principle stand on the limits of the Executive Branch.

It will be very interesting to see how Harry Reid digs himself out of this one on Monday.

Reid to Boehner - Ditch the TEA Party

The Hill: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Monday urged Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to ditch members of the Tea Party and cut a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown.

Reid insisted it is those GOP internal divisions that are threatening to shut down the government after April 8, in less than two weeks.

“For the sake of our economy, it’s time for mainstream Republicans to stand up to the Tea Party and rejoin Democrats at the table to negotiate a responsible solution that cuts spending while protecting jobs," he said.

Last week Reid put $7.5 billion in discretionary cuts and $3.5 billion in mandatory savings on the table as a counteroffer to the $51 billion in additional cuts the GOP is seeking.

This week Democrats are mulling raising the offer to $20 billion. But Democratic aides insist it is the divided GOP that must make the next move and come back to the negotiating table, not Democrats who must continue to negotiate with themselves and up their offer. [MORE]

Reid is trying to use the TEA Party as the reason for a government shut down. It won't work. Anyone with two eyes can see that the piddly little cuts Democrats and the Republican leadership are playing with are completely inadequate for tackling the deficit. So pretending that "progress" could be made if Boenher abandon the more sizable (but still inadequate) cuts the TEA Party wants is absurd.

The fact that Democrats have gone from zero cuts to a possible $20 billion, pretty much tells us that they are finding it harder and harder to resist spending cuts. Had the Republican leadership not been so "compromising" about cuts, Reid would probably be negotiating much more sizable cuts by now.

The Blaze: While speaking at an event this weekend, West — a former Army colonel — mocked Reid’s prediction from last week that the Tea Party won’t last.

“This morning you know I had an interview on Fox, and Brian asked me a very simple question. He played that little clip of Harry Reid that said, ah you know the Tea Party, they’re going to go away,” he said in voice that mimicked a troll while making a face and hunching over. The crowd erupted in cheers.

He then delivered a message of his own: “Well let me tell you something Majority Leader Reid, the American people are not going away.”

The brother is fearless. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't wish Rep. West was on the political scene 10 years ago. If he was, he would be ready for 2012. Sadly, we will have to wait a few more years for West to seek the White House.

Harry Reid: Don't cut the Cowboy Poets!

In the middle of his tirade against House Republicans' "mean-spirited" budget bill on the Senate floor Tuesday, the Senate Majority Leader lamented that the GOP’s proposed budget cuts would eliminate the annual "cowboy poetry festival” in his home state of Nevada.[...]

“The mean-spirited bill, H.R. 1 … eliminates the National Endowment of the Humanities, National Endowment of the Arts,” said Reid. “These programs create jobs. The National Endowment of the Humanities is the reason we have in northern Nevada every January a cowboy poetry festival. Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”[...]

For the record, the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is in Elko, Nev., next January. The 28th annual festival, a “week-long celebration of life in the rural West, featuring the contemporary and traditional arts of western ranching culture,” is expected to draw thousands of people, according to the festival’s website.

1. Who knew there was even such an animal as "Cowboy Poets"?
2. If "tens of thousands" of people are coming to see the Cowboy Poets, then why not charge a little extra at the door and skip the government funding all together?
3. If Republicans cannot cut such a silly and needless waste of taxpayer dollars like this, then this once great republic is lost.
4. Harry Reid's big mouth can be like Christmas in July.

Just words just speeches: Harry Reid calls Obama’s bluff on earmarks

It looks like Harry Reid is throwing Obama under the bus over earmarks.  During the SOTU Obama vowed not to sign any bills with earmarks in them. Now most of us realize that Obama’s vow is just another steaming pile of BS, but for Harry Reid to straight up admit it is rather interesting.

ABC News: In an interview with ABC's Jonathan Karl, Reid launched a vigorous defense of pork, the pet projects that members of Congress insert into bills to benefit their home states.

"I think it's taking power away from the legislative branch of government and giving it to the executive branch of government," Reid said of the president's plan. "The executive branch of government is powerful enough and I think that I know more about what Nevada needs than some bureaucrat down on K Street."

"So you think the president is wrong about this?" Karl asked.

"Without any question," Reid replied.

 "I understand it's great for an applause line, but it's really not solving anything to do with the deficit. It's only for show."

"So you're saying that earmarks will be back?" said Karl.

"Of course they'll be back," said Reid. 

I think Harry’s harsh words is just a set up for Obama to knock him down,  thus providing Obama with another opportunity to employ smoke and mirrors in order to look centrist again for 2012.

If Reid was even remotely serious about ceding power to the Executive Branch, he would have squawked about the explosive number of czars, or the EPA doing end runs around Congress, or ObamaCare which leaves huge chunks to be written by bureaucrats. Sorry, I am not buying this excuse.

Time will tell, but I think I will be right and Harry is just playing strawman for Obama to knock down.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Mark Kirk, Harry Reid and Barney Frank victories

Bittersweet: Mark Kirk wins Obama’s old senate seat

While I am tickled pink that Obama’s old senate seat went to Republicans, I hate that it went to one of the Cap and Tax 8.  With six years ahead of him, I hold little hope that Mark Kirk will follow conservative principles.  Look for this bozo to be the fly in the ointment over the next few years.

Harry Reid survives

Harry Reid lives to fight another day.  We will now have six more years of this pipsqueak elitist. Of all the races I wanted Democrats to lose, this was the one.  Oh, well there is always 2012 to make Harry minority leader of the Senate.

Sharron Angle has nothing to be ashamed of.  She came out of nowhere and gave one of the most powerful Democrats a serious run for the money. 

Barney Frank survives too

If there is anyone who deserved to be shown the door, it was Barney Frank.  So much of our mortgage mess with Fannie and Freddie can be laid at Barney Frank’s feet.  Shame on you Massachusetts! This nasty gasbag should have been shown the door decades ago.

I just got through watching the Harry Reid and Sharron Angle debate.  I agree with the consensus that Harry Reid lost this one. I think Reid lost it because he was up against two challengers.  First was Sharron Angle who despite not being a polished debater, appear sane and competent and spoke with conviction. The other opponent was Reid himself.  For someone who has been in Washington for 30 years, Reid turned in a very armature performance. From convoluted answers to shuffling papers, Harry Reid did little to make the case for the status quo in a year where people are looking for real change.

Reid poor performance was evident from the get go. His opening statement was an awkward combination of his personal history and a questionable laundry list of Democratic accomplishments. Compare and contrast with Sharron Angle whose opening statement was smoothly delivered by identifying with the everyday man.

I think after this debate, thing will start moving in Angle’s direction.  Reid and the Democrats spent a lot of time and money trying to paint Angle as a crazy extremist.  There was nothing in her performance that lends credence to that. Reid on the other hand, did very little to showcase his experience and thus left Nevada voters little reason not to change senators.

Below are some notes I jotted down throughout the debate. They are in no particular order.

Man up: Did Angle say this in reference to Reid’s opening remarks that he was not as big a man as his father? If so, that was very slick on Angle’s part.

Angle’s performance:  My major criticism of Angle is the smiling.  I understand she might have been nervous, but some of the things she discusses are dead serious and a smile is so inappropriate. I am glad she addressed this in her closing remarks.  My other criticism is more of a nitpick; Angle seemed to struggle to deliver some of her remarks almost like she had committed some of it to memory.  I suspect as she gains more experience she won’t have that problem again.

Reid’s poor performance: I think the reason Reid did so poorly is because he had the harder job.  He had to defend policies that the American public is forcefully rejecting. As such, he had to pick and choose his words and was forced to make arguments for a define set of parameters. Angle on the other hand could speak much more freely and forcefully because she is working with simple commonsense solutions that the public has been asking for.

Moderator Mitch Fox: All the major networks should take note of this guy. Fox knows how to moderate a debate.  He pressed both Reid and Angle hard when they tried to avoid answering questions.  I got the distinct feeling that Mitch Fox was on the side of all Nevadans rather than a party hack masquerading as a newsman.  Too bad Christine O’Donnell did not have a moderator like Fox for her debate.

Palin Red?  Have any of you notice that a slew of female Republican candidates are now sporting red jackets like Sarah Palin did in 2008?  Is Angle sending a Mama Grizzle message?

Another Reid gaffe: Reid called the Department of Education the Department of Energy (see 42:45 mark)

About those Benjamins, Harry: To me this was Sharron Angle’s best moment (see 51:30 mark).  Every politician on the public dime, who has a huge increase in their line 23, should be asked this question.  How did you get so rich on the government dime?

Closing statements: Reid digging for papers? Are you kidding me? Angle’s use of the word “angle” was rather cute.

Harry Reid’s lame attempt to pass The Dream Act and repeal DADT

Yesterday, Harry Reid’s silly political theater fell flat on the Senate floor. Reid had attempted to piggy back a small piece of amnesty called The Dream Act and the repeal of Don’t, Ask Don’t Tell on a defense authorization bill.  The bill was defeated 56-43.

Politico has a story up today saying how both illegal immigration supporters and gay rights activists are now unhappy with how Reid handled the two issues.  Some are accusing Reid of bringing up the two issues to help with is floundering reelection campaign in Nevada.

To me, it looks like Reid is playing with yesterday’s playbook.  The ploy of amending important and necessary legislation with partisan issues is an old one used by both the right and the left.  However, after the way ObamaCare was handled, the public now sees these old ploys as more dirty backroom dealing.  In the end, I don’t think Reid will get the desired effect he wanted (getting Republicans to vote against defense spending and then using that to bash them as not supporting the troops). I think he did more to zap the enthusiasm from his own base as both The Dream Act and DADT may have to wait for the next congress.

None of the above: Harry Reid vs. Sharron Angle

The Las Vegas Review Journal has an interesting poll out today showing that Nevada voters would prefer someone other that Harry Reid or Sharron Angle. 

Two-thirds of voters who say they back Sharron Angle wish another Republican had won the nomination, according to a poll for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and 8NewsNow that shows deep dissatisfaction with both the Tea Party pick and U.S. Sen. Harry Reid. 

Nearly eight of 10 voters who remain undecided or who don't like Angle or Reid say they, too, would have preferred if the staunch conservative hadn't won the June 8 primary over her more moderate foes. And 58 percent of such nonaligned voters say they wish Reid hadn't won the Democratic nomination, suggesting a majority of Nevadans are unhappy with their choices.  [MORE] 

While this may sound like very bad news for Sharron Angle, Legal Insurrection points out what is really going on. 

The latest Mason-Dixon Poll released by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows Reid up 1 point, 45-44.

The headlines are screaming that 68% of voters would have preferred another GOP candidate, but that seems like a meaningless number since the choice is between Reid and Angle, and on that choice voters are largely split.  If anything, that number may reflect that voters wanted a stronger GOP candidate to get rid of Reid, hardly a measure in which Reid should take comfort.

Here are the key numbers:  Reid still is only polling at 45%, an abysmal number this late in the game for a multi-term incumbent.  Despite two months of pummelling Angle, Reid still has higher negative numbers: 

It isn’t surprising to me to see that Nevada Republicans are less than enthusiastic about Angle. Angle’s problem is that she simply was not ready for the hot glare of the national media. Just like Rand Paul, once Angle emerged the winner, the media quickly set out to paint her as extreme. Angle’s inexperience with dealing with a lopsided media quickly provided tons of fodder that could be used to paint her as extreme. 

Angle could have benefited greatly from a media consultant who could have helped her quickly define herself, rather than having herself defined by the Reid camp and the media.

Fortunately for Angle, she is running against Harry Reid, the Democrat Senate Majority leader. All the bad stuff over the last two years can be instantly tied to Harry (Bailouts = Harry, Stimulus = Harry, ObamaCare = Harry, backroom wheeling and dealing = Harry). Angle simply needs to keep driving this message home and then ask the simply question, does Harry really deserve another term after all of that?

For Harry Reid, time is running out. There is just a little over 60 days before midterm elections and he is still below 50% and only one point ahead of  Sharron Angle. There really isn’t much more Reid can do other than to keep going negative on Angle. Everyone knows who he is and what he has done. Reid simply cannot run from his record.

To add insult to injury, the NRA has now declared they will not be endorsing Reid’s re-election bid. This is coming after a recent e-mail praising Reid on guns!

Harry Reid goes racial again: "I don't know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican."

Harry, Harry, Harry, you sour puss cracker! Just cannot leave that race card alone for five minutes can you? After comparing opposition to ObamaCare to those who opposed the abolition of slavery and then making that Negro dialect comment about Obama, Harry Reid has decided he knows what is best for Hispanics. 

The Weekly Standard: While campaigning in Nevada Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told an audience of mostly Hispanic voters: "I don't know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, okay. Do I need to say more?" Watch the video here: 

For starters, Harry Reid might want to try speaking with some Cuban Americans.  After experiencing extreme leftist policies first hand, many of them could write volumes about why they are Republicans.

Another person Harry Reid should talk to on the subject would be Hispanic Republican Brian Sandoval. Sandoval is currently beating the pants of Harry Reid’s son Rory Reid in Nevada’s gubernatorial race.

For a real eye opener, Harry Reid should talk to my friend Samuel Gonzalez author of The Last Tradition. In an email we shared this morning on this topic, Samuel had this to say:

As a Latino and strong Conservative, I won’t say I was personally offended by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s recent comments when he told Latinos on the campaign trail, "I don't know how anyone of Hispanic heritage could be a Republican, okay. Do I need to say more?"

I’m not offended, but Hispanics in Navada and across the nation should be! 

They should  be offended because Reid is doing exactly what all Denocrats do to Latinos and Blacks come election time, crack the “mental plantation” whip that keeps Latinos in line.  

You see, according to Harry Reid’s mindset, Latinos are an inferior group that cannot achieve anything for themselves without the help of the government or the Democrat Party.  

You can call it the "racism of dependency and low expectations".  White Democrats get to practice this type of racism with impunity only because Latinos and Blacks let them get away with it.  

These types of comments by Reid and other Democrats will continue because they know it works with the target audience. 

So as a Latino who voted for Ronald Reagan, I ask my fellow Latinos and Blacks, how long will you continue to support a party that expects nothing from you except your votes to keep their party afloat?  A party that says to you through lies and deception that they are your only protectors and hide their true history of being the original enslavers of Black people.  

How long will you succumb to “group think” that perpetually ties you to one party from birth simply because of the color of your skin?  

Can you really call that freedom or is it slavery?

Harry Reid Supporters throw eggs at Tea Party Express bus and Andrew Breitbart

Harry Reid’s goon squad was working overtime today. 

From Tea Party Express III: Supporters of Senator Harry Reid have just thrown eggs at the Tea Party Express bus caravan - striking at least one of the three buses (the red Tea Party Express bus) with multiple eggs. 

About 35 Reid supporters had lined Highway 95 in front of the Nugget Casino in Searchlight where they were attempting a counter-demonstration the tens of thousands of tea party supporters who are gathering for the "Showdown in Searchlight." 

If that wasn’t enough, when Andrew Breitbart confronted Reid’s goons, they tried and failed to egg him too. 

From the Founding Bloggers: Supporters of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid staged a counter-protest today in Searchlight, Nevada, the Senator’s hometown.  Reid supporters gathered just down the road from the launching point of the Tea Party Express tour, and when Breitbart happened upon them, he was met with threats of violence.  At least one protester threw an egg at Brietbart, missing him.  Eggs were also thrown at the Tea Party Express bus.

To add insult to insult, Reid supporters called the police to report that Breitbart had provoked an incident. 

Typical leftists. They cry about “intimidation” if you raise your voice above a whisper, but they are usually the ones who actually get violent. Violence might be the only way Harry Reid gets his sorry ass reelected.

Fake Nevada Tea Party candidate facing felony charges

Scott Ashjian, a fake Tea Party candidate, running for Harry Reid’s seat is facing felony charges for bouncing checks. 

From Associated Press: A Nevada asphalt contractor who faces a legal challenge to his Tea Party of Nevada candidacy for U.S. Senate was hit Friday with felony theft and bad check charges in Las Vegas that allege he bounced a $5,000 business check last year.

Scott Ashjian is one of a record 22 candidates, including 12 Republicans, running for the seat held by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is seeking a fifth term.

Bernie Zadrowski, head of the Clark County district attorney’s office bad check unit, said he would seek an arrest warrant Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court. Ashjian could face up to 14 years in state prison if convicted.

The Associated Press failed to mention that Ashjian is a fake Tea Partier. Instead in their article they say the Tea Parties are distancing themselves from Ashjian: 

The tea party movement is a disparate coalition of conservative groups angered by federal spending, rising taxes and the growth and reach of government. Other tea party activists have been distancing themselves from Ashjian, and an ad targeting him has been sponsored by the Tea Party Express, one of the most visible factions of the national tea party movement. 

Actually the Tea Parties were calling him out as a fake because they never heard of him:

Bob Owens at Pajamas Media sniffed out Scott Ashjian as a fake three weeks ago: 

[..] Suddenly, the same Democratic politicians and pundits who dismissively referred to those involved in the populist revolt with a sexual pejorativefound that it was a force to be reckoned with — and, if possible, to be undermined and marginalized.

There is perhaps no clearer example of an attempt to co-opt and undermine the tea party movement than the false flag operation that appears to be taking place in Nevada for the benefit of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Unpopular nationally for being thin-skinned and surly, Reid is foundering in his home state of Nevada, where he faces reelection in November. Reid has consistently trailed Republican challengers in his reelection bid; he trails all four in recent polls. Without a major shift, Reid’s political career would seem to be on the cusp of drawing to an ignoble end.

And then in walked Scott Ashjian.

You can be forgiven if you don’t know who Scott Ashjian is, or where he came from, or if he’s even a serious candidate. Even local journalists haven’t had much luck figuring that out. All we know for certain is that Ashjian seems poised to jump into the 2010 Nevada Senate race as a third-party candidate representing the newly formed Tea Party of Nevada. [...]

I looked at Scott’s Ashjian's campaign site and aside from looking a little on the cheap side, it reads like someone trying a little too hard to sound like a Tea Partier. Further, a look at Scott’s Facebook page and you have to wonder if the guy has any real roots in Nevada. He only have 30 friends that consist of family members, kids too young to vote and people from outside Nevada and it looks like the page is only a month or two old.

With Harry Reid below 50%, a third party candidate in the race is the only way for him to win reelection. So having a plant like Scott Ashjian would be the perfect answer to Harry’s prayers. If I were Harry, I would start searching for Plan B.

As November approaches, desperate Democrats will no doubt try to play all kinds of tricks with the Tea Party.  My advice to all of you is to do as much research as possible on any candidate you are considering voting for. Dig back as far as you can into their voting records, histories, etc. The last thing we need is to replace one joker in Washington with another one.

How can that many people not have heard enough about Pelosi and Reid?

I clicked on the CBS poll this morning to read about Nancy Pelosi’s 11% approval rating, but I was immediately floored by the number of people who responded that they have not heard enough about her to have an opinion. For crying out loud the woman has been Speaker of the House since 2006! Where the heck did CBS find these people, on some remote island in the Pacific?

Even less people have heard about Harry Reid! Dingy Harry was in the news almost everyday just before Christmas. Again I have to wonder who are these people CBS is polling.

The political make up of the people polled are mostly Democrats and Independents, but come on even they cannot be that uninformed.

I have to wonder do any of these people follow news or are they only interested in reading about Andre Pitre, Hot Carl and the Castle Spoilers. Geez, focus people, these clowns are running our government!

Harry Reid’s wife and daughter in serious car crash.

From Politico: Harry Reid's wife, Landra, suffered a broken neck, back and nose and his daughter, Lana, also sustained serious injuries in a chain-reaction car accident in Fairfax, Va. on Thursday  according to Reid's spokesman.

Both women's injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening -- and both have sensation in their extremities, an indication that they aren't paralyzed, Reid spokesman Jon Summers said.

Reid's wife is listed in serious condition and will stay in the hospital, but his daughter will be released. The initial prognosis for Reid's wife is that no surgery will be required, Summer said. .

“They are being treated at a Washington-area hospital. While driving on a Washington, DC, highway, their vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck," Summers wrote in an email.

"Mrs. Reid has a broken nose, broken back and broken neck. Lana has a neck injury and facial lacerations. Both Mrs. Reid and Lana are conscious, can feel their extremities, and according to doctors their injuries are non-life threatening. Senator Reid has been to the hospital and appreciates the support he and his family are receiving from Nevadans and his colleagues in the Senate."

Reid was pulled out of a meeting and was rushed to the hospital to visit them but was expected to return to the Senate this evening, aides said.

The majority leader, 70, met Landra, 69, when both attended high school in Henderson, Nev. They were married in 1959. 

It is all too easy to let politics dehumanize our political adversaries. I hope never to let that happen to me, so I shall say a prayer for Harry Reid, that his wife and daughter have a speedy recovery. May God give Harry Reid the strength he needs to help his wife and daughter through their recovery.

Thanks for nothing! Reid gets no bounce from Obama visit

Two weeks ago when Obama visited Las Vegas, he was singing Harry Reid’s praises while turning on the old Hopey Changey charm.  Well the poll numbers are in folks and Reid still has zilch! 

From The Las Vegas Review-Journal: Reid got no bounce from Obama's visit on Feb. 19, when the president spoke highly of him at Green Valley High School and to business leaders at CityCenter, polling indicates.

A larger percentage of voters surveyed (17 percent) said they would be less likely to vote for Reid following the president's visit than said they would be more likely to vote for him (7 percent). Seventy-five percent said Obama's visit would have no effect on how they vote.

"Reid was not helped, and Obama was not any more popular than he was before he came to the state," said Brad Coker, managing director at Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

Is anyone really surprised? Obama’s numbers have declined and he is doing precious little to address the true concerns of the nation. How Reid ever got elected so many times is a great mystery to me. However, it appears that the people of Nevada are starting to ask the same question.

In another poll, each Republican contender defeats Reid. The only way Harry wins is if a Tea Party candidate runs and creates a three-way race. The Tea Party of Nevada had better think long and hard about running a candidate. It would be far better for them to get behind the most conservative GOP candidate for 2010 than to risk Reid remaining in the Senate. For 2010 and 2012 the main focus should be ending the Democratic Majority.
