Chris Dodd is expected to announce that he will not seek re-election today. This comes on the heels of Senator Byron Dorgan’s (D-ND) announced retirement yesterday. As the number of Democrat House Reps and Senators who will not seek re-election rises, many on the right are beaming with the prospect of House and Senate gains.
What is being overlooked is that these Democrat House Reps and Senators are free to vote for whatever crappy legislation they please without a worry about answering to their constituents. In essence they are like Dead Men Walking. They have nothing to lose by going against the will of the people for the next eleven months.
So as we all cheer about another Dem biting the dust before 2010, let us take time to realize the threat these retiring Dems pose.

In CT at least, it is a bad thing for conservatives. It more or less guarantees that the dems will hold the seat. Had he sought re-election he would have lost. I am sure that he pressured into this. His ego is the size of the grand canyon. Although, I don't think Linda McMahon is any prize anyway.
I grew up there, he is only senator that I remember.
They were ignoring us already. They have contracted with a third party for their votes. Because the sure as HELL aren't contracted with the American People.
Their retirement does not change the reality that they are ignoring us.
Dodd should be in jail, not simply retiring.
It's a shame Dodd is retiring. The Connecticut Democrats have essentially pulled a "Legal Torricelli" - dumping their incumbent and hoping for a successful bait and switch. The hell of it is that it may actually work.
November is a long way away and a lot of damage can be done by Dodd while the new Democratic candidate lies to the people and says he/she will be different. Of course if the new Dem gets elected they'll most likely walk lock-step with the rest of the jackasses.
There will be damage, since they think they can pass laws that can't be reversed. Sadly, even the inevitable court fights will cost taxpayers more money.
Clifton B., you make a good point. As Opus #6 said they were ignoring us anyway, but if they're not up for re-election they could be as reckless as they wish. Not forgetting there is such a thing as treason.
JACG:
Thanks for the inside skinny. I don't think Dodd's replacement will fare that much better in the end. I say this because, I basically see the Democratic Party as damaged goods. Too many Americans have seen what a Democrat majority looks like and they don't like it. In the end, even the replacement Dems are going to have a tough row, because people will realize that subbing one Dem or another will still yield the same totalitarian structure.
Opus #6:
You are correct that they are ignoring us now, but they are not doing it in a vacuum. The Dems are fully aware that they are damaging their party. These retired Dems are like Rogue characters. They need not concern themselves with party or constituents. That is what makes them so dangerous.
Writer X:
In a perfect world, he would already be in an orange jumpsuit fighting off the advances of Barney Frank!
El Cerdo:
I am not too sure it may work. The Democrats have basically damaged their brand. They and their media friends just don't know it yet.
Spinsterpov:
It is fear of new Dems walking lockstep with the Obama, Pelosi, Reid agenda that will be their downfall as well. Just look at Mass. Why is that race so close? Because people are very leery about electing another Democrat.
Jess:
Yes we have a life time until November anything can happen between now an then.
A Political Nightmare:
Welcome to ABC! I am not shedding a tear for any of them!

That is exactly what I am worried about. They went buck wild when they were trying to run for re-election. What the hell can we expect from them now?
