Breitbart to Maher: You’re not a libertarian

This is a fun video. Bill Maher, who is such a fraud, gets called out by Andrew Breitbart for being a socialist rather than a libertarian.

NewsBusters:
And here's where it got good. Readers are strongly advised to watch the video to see Maher's expression when Breitbart nails him:
ANDREW BREITBART: So you're, you're officially not a Libertarian anymore, right? I mean, this position...
MAHER: Well..
BREITBART: ...has run so far from the Libertarian position. Is this, so you admit that you have more of a, you know, European socialist leaning perspective on this issue?
(AUDIENCE LAUGHTER)
BREITBART: Why is that funny?
The look on Maher's face at this moment said it all:

MAHER: I'm, I'm not afraid, it's not, I'm not afraid to say European socialism works.
European socialism works? This is exactly why I say Bill Maher is a fraud.  Europe is now in the grips of austerity measures because socialism worked so well there.

Maher has made a rather lucrative career by employing snark as a mask for intellect.  However when Maher comes up against anyone with real smarts he is exposed as the intellectual lightweight he really is.  Remember this embarrassing moment for Maher?

The only reason why Bill Maher ever called himself a libertarian is because it made him look bright and above the fray of typical left and right politics, NOT because he has a real understanding or belief in the libertarian position.

Rand Paul and the Civil Rights Act question

Rand Paul needs to start doing some homework ASAP. Only one day after his landslide victory, Rand Paul is in a Catch 22. Today on NPR, Rand Paul was again presented with the Civil Rights question.  As a libertarian, Paul is extremely cautious against government’s ability to dictate to the private sector. Knowing this, Robert Sigel from NPR puts forth a hypothetical question about the Civil Rights Act:

Here is the Catch 22. If Paul says he fully supports how the feds forced the private sector to end segregation he loses libertarian street cred, but by only supporting the results of the Civil Rights Act and not the actual legislation, Paul gives the left room to paint him as a racist.

Rand Paul should have been better prepared to answer this question. This isn’t the first time he has encountered it. Here is an interview he did with the Courier Journal editorial board last month.

The left smells an opening here and will push this issue to the hilt. However, I would caution the left against thinking that the libertarian position has no merit here.

Do you remember that guy in Georgia who put up that racist anti Obama sign? I think it is safe to say there are no blacks spending their hard earned money in that establishment. As such, hasn’t this guy circumvented the Civil Rights Act and achieved segregation of his establishment by hiding behind his First Amendment rights? Should we allow government to curtail all our First Amendment rights to shut him down?  If yes, what do we do when he tries something else to keep blacks out? Do we then allow government to regulate all private businesses further? When do we draw a line with trading our liberties to right an obvious wrong?  Perhaps boycotts and the free market can play a role in shutting him down, something to think about.

The Nolan Charts says I am Another Black Libertarian

I took Glenn Beck’s quiz today to figure out where I land on the Nolan Chart. I landed firmly in the Libertarian column. I have taken the Nolan Chart quiz several times before and I always come out libertarian. What was a little surprising was how far in the libertarian zone I landed this time around.

If you want to take the quiz, click here.  Be warned their server is as slow as molasses.  After you take the quiz, come back and tell us how you did. If you missed tonight episode of Beck here is the first part, click over to The Right Scoop for parts 2 to 7.
