Japan: Grace under fire

Watching the events unfold in Japan over the last few days has been like watching one of those over the top Hollywood disaster flicks.  An earthquake, a tsunami, an out of control nuclear reactor, constant tremors, a volcano and now nuclear snow, all seems like the stuff over zealous story writers cram into a single movie. Yet these things are really happening.

Despite this week from hell, the composure of the Japanese is beyond belief. Here in America the freak out session would have long begun. Heck, our own Surgeon General is telling people to buy iodine for the fallout from Japan's reactors even though the reactors are over 5,000 miles away!

We could all take a lesson from Japan. The Japanese people aren't even looting and the bravery of the 50 workers sticking it out at Fukushima is beyond impressive.

As America steers in the face of economic collapse with high unemployment, rising food and gas prices, unsustainable debt and a completely ineffective spendthrift Federal government, I pray our better angels emerge, like Japan,  when our crisis time finally comes.

It certainly contrasts with those in Haiti, the Middle East, and those from Katrina.

Gorges:

It most certainly does. Especially Katrina vs. Japan.

sadly, commenting on this is turning into a race issue. This has nothing to do with race, it has to do with respect and a belief in personal responsibility. They are brought up that way, it is part of their culture. We need to get back to a point where the western world does the same.

The thing I hated seeing during Katrina was the complete helplessness some folks had. Young and strong were just sitting around waiting to be helped.

Not me, if I had gotten caught there, I would have fashioned myself a raft and paddled the heck on out. I certainly would not have been crammed into that stadium waiting to be helped.

Thanks

It should not be turned into a race issue. It is a comparison of societies. When the pressure is on Japan's society keeps it together.

Color me stupid but I see nothing racist in any of the comments. Perhaps people who look for racism are likely to find it? An explanation would come in handy right now. Where exactly was race called into this?

After hearing of the 7 million dollars of damage done to the floors in Madison, WI by protesters, I don't have to wonder which country is more genteel, more kind, more caring for their neighbors.

My heart breaks for those who have lost so much. And I'm not referring to the WI labor unions!
