Mitt Romney won the SRLC straw poll yesterday, so what does that tell us? It tells us that Mitt Romney was better at gaming the straw poll this time than Ron Paul was.
Here are the official results from SRLC:
If the primary election for president were held today, for whom would you vote? Please check the box by the candidate of your choice.
Newt Gingrich 18%
Mike Huckabee 4%
Gary Johnson 1%
Sarah Palin 18%
Ron Paul 24% (438 votes)
Tim Pawlenty 3%
Mike Pence 3%
Mitt Romney 24% (439 votes)
Rick Santorum 2%
2. Who would be your second choice in the Republican Primary Election for president?
Newt Gingrich 19%
Mike Huckabee 10%
Gary Johnson 6%
Sarah Palin 18%
Ron Paul 5%
Tim Pawlenty 6%
Mike Pence 8%
Mitt Romney 13%
Rick Santorum 7%
It would have been interesting to see what the numbers would have been like without the gaming. Where would have Romney and Paul actually placed? For myself, I don’t think Romney has really answered the RomneyCare question. Romney's Tenth Amendment argument seems a wee bit weak to me (National socialism = bad, State level socialism = good). On the upside, Romney still has over a year to come up with a better answer.

It is amazing that Paul didn't win, he offered reduced price tickets to the conference.
Also, who the heck is Gary Johnson?
Rick Santorum? Please, this is a man who had an empty house in PA in order to say he lived there. If that is our choice we are deep trouble.
I hope you saw Herman Cain's speech. I love him, he also ended his speech by saying that "a dark horse" may be running for the nomination. He is amazing.
I'm sorry, but I just don't like Romney. I think that if he is chosen the Republican candidate, then we're going to end-up with four more years of Obama. I think he sold out his conservative principles to get himself elected Governor of Massachusettes, and then there's Romneycare to contend with in the campaign.
I agree with JACG- We are in trouble and we may not even be able to capitalize on the Democrats gigantic blunder of Obamanomics due to our own failure of leadership.
Now about finding that perfect candidate- It's not going to happen because one doesn't exist.
I would love to see many of the people on the list as president, but I would like to think in the broader sense of, "are they electable?". Who has the least flaws and whose flaws are the least offensive. It would be a good thing if it were someone that energized our base, but I think many on our side would support a decent enough candidate to save this country. Most importantly, IMO, it has to be someone that bonehead "moderates/independents" (boneheads because anyone who doesn't have an opinion or know where they stand are cowards) can support. What does the independent/moderate demographic support or better yet, what don't they hate? Then pick a candidate accordingly. Someone that will not turn them away and make it more likely to support a candidate against Obama.
Maybe this is my naivete, but why can't Romney just come out and admit maybe it wasn't the best move and that if he were to do it over again (ahem, as president) that he would do things differently? I know politicians never do this but maybe somebody should. I really liked Romney but his Romneycare issue is a killer for me. Palin is still my fave right now.
Paul Ryan
@just a conservative girl, Gary Johnson is the former governor of New Mexico, alot of of libertarians I know would support him since most of his views are similar to Ron Paul's.
JACG:
I guess next time Ron Paul should give away a few free tickets LOL.
I have not heard of Gary Johnson either. Rick Santorum needs to stay retired, he is yesterday's news.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for pointing out Cain's speech. This dude is electric. Sarah Palin may have some competition after all.

Obama is already softening up Mitt Romney for 2012. Everywhere on the left you can hear the compliments for RomneyCare and how much it is just like ObamaCare.
When ObamaCare passed Romney's 2012 aspirations took a major nosedive.
Ozzie:
Re: electablity
Don't fall into the trap that we must pick someone who if free of media slights. This is how we end up with presidents who abandon principle. Instead, your job between now and Nov 2012 is to point out media bias to any and everyone you can. We cannot whittle our candidates down to those who pass media muster.
That being said, there are a few non starters we should discourage from running in 2012. Santorum, Pawlenty, Romney, Barber These guys are yesterday's news. They simply are not up to the tasks that will be before them in 2012. They are still playing the old game.
For me, the 2012 candidate must prove three things equally
1. Be a strong fiscal conservative.
2. Understand they are not dealing with Democrats from yesterday.
3. Be electable and appealing.
Lisa:
Unfortunately for Romney, he is in a damn if you do, damn if you don't situation. If he defends RomneyCare he will lose support. If he admits it was a mistake, he would have admitted he made one hell of a blunder and lose support.
The hard truth is Romney became damaged goods when ObamaCare passed.
Janelle:
I would love to see Paul Ryan run ... after he became governor somewhere. I am too through with legislators as President. A president needs executive experience.

Thanks for the info.
Clifton, a President needs executive experience? Like whom? At running what? I give you Charlie Crist and raise you.
