On Newsmax.com writer John Perry writes a pretty stunning piece about Obama risking a Military Coup. Needless to say the left is beyond hyperventilation. I copied the entire piece here just in case it gets pulled. Read it and then lets discuss.
Obama Risks a Domestic Military ‘Intervention’
Tuesday, September 29, 2009 10:35 AM
By: John L. PerryThere is a remote, although gaining, possibility America’s military will intervene as a last resort to resolve the “Obama problem.” Don’t dismiss it as unrealistic.
America isn’t the Third World. If a military coup does occur here it will be civilized. That it has never happened doesn’t mean it wont. Describing what may be afoot is not to advocate it. So, view the following through military eyes:
· Officers swear to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” Unlike enlisted personnel, they do not swear to “obey the orders of the president of the United States.”
· Top military officers can see the Constitution they are sworn to defend being trampled as American institutions and enterprises are nationalized.
· They can see that Americans are increasingly alarmed that this nation, under President Barack Obama, may not even be recognizable as America by the 2012 election, in which he will surely seek continuation in office.
· They can see that the economy — ravaged by deficits, taxes, unemployment, and impending inflation — is financially reliant on foreign lender governments.
· They can see this president waging undeclared war on the intelligence community, without whose rigorous and independent functions the armed services are rendered blind in an ever-more hostile world overseas and at home.
· They can see the dismantling of defenses against missiles targeted at this nation by avowed enemies, even as America’s troop strength is allowed to sag.
· They can see the horror of major warfare erupting simultaneously in two, and possibly three, far-flung theaters before America can react in time.
· They can see the nation’s safety and their own military establishments and honor placed in jeopardy as never before.
So, if you are one of those observant military professionals, what do you do?
Wait until this president bungles into losing the war in Afghanistan, and Pakistan’s arsenal of nuclear bombs falls into the hands of militant Islam?
Wait until Israel is forced to launch air strikes on Iran’s nuclear-bomb plants, and the Middle East explodes, destabilizing or subjugating the Free World?
What happens if the generals Obama sent to win the Afghan war are told by this president (who now says, “I’m not interested in victory”) that they will be denied troops they must have to win? Do they follow orders they cannot carry out, consistent with their oath of duty? Do they resign en masse?
Or do they soldier on, hoping the 2010 congressional elections will reverse the situation? Do they dare gamble the national survival on such political whims?
Anyone who imagines that those thoughts are not weighing heavily on the intellect and conscience of America’s military leadership is lost in a fool’s fog.
Will the day come when patriotic general and flag officers sit down with the president, or with those who control him, and work out the national equivalent of a “family intervention,” with some form of limited, shared responsibility?
Imagine a bloodless coup to restore and defend the Constitution through an interim administration that would do the serious business of governing and defending the nation. Skilled, military-trained, nation-builders would replace accountability-challenged, radical-left commissars. Having bonded with his twin teleprompters, the president would be detailed for ceremonial speech-making.
Military intervention is what Obama’s exponentially accelerating agenda for “fundamental change” toward a Marxist state is inviting upon America. A coup is not an ideal option, but Obama’s radical ideal is not acceptable or reversible.
Unthinkable? Then think up an alternative, non-violent solution to the Obama problem. Just don’t shrug and say, “We can always worry about that later.”
In the 2008 election, that was the wistful, self-indulgent, indifferent reliance on abnegation of personal responsibility that has sunk the nation into this morass.
Caught you breath yet? Yes this is some pretty radical stuff; first, I think Mr. Perry has some major issues with Obama and is getting cart way out in front of the horse. While Obama’s policies are dreadfully socialist and Washington has grown rather deaf to the voice of the people, public pressure is still working.
Just look at yesterday how a Democratically controlled senate was unable to pass an amendment for the Public Option. Why do you think that is? Easy, public pressure still works. Those Democrats saw our anger at those Town Hall meetings. They know their jobs are on the line and they responded to our wishes. So, we are not at the end of the rope and We The People are not without power.
Now, on to this whole Military Coup business, first let’s take Obama’s name out of the equation so that it is less inflammatory and then lets look at this again.
Despite popular belief, America is not a democracy. America is a Constitutional Republic. As such, we are a nation of laws with the Constitution reigning supreme. This is also why our military swears allegiance to the Constitution and not to an elected official. Even the elected officials swear to uphold and defend the Constitution. So yes, the military can act against any president or congress that flat out thwarts the Constitution.
Read our founding documents and the words of our Founding Fathers and the message is clear, power does not rest with government but with the people. Our Founding Fathers gave us both tools and encouragement to over throw ANY government that grows tyrannical. This is why our words and our weapons take the number one and number two spots in the Amendments.
Now here is the shocking part, this kind of stuff has been true since the dawn of our government and so long as we keep our true rights and liberties, it will remain true until the end of time. So while talk of a military coup is shocking and scary, the military’s allegiance to the Constitution is just another check and balance in our form of government designed to keep a free people free.
Now lets get back to opposing those dreadful policies the way Americans normally do, protest, protest, protest!
UPDATE:
Vidal Gore goes there too. Well it seems that delusional talk isn’t just for the right. Vidal Gore in a Time of London piece goes there too:
Barack Obama is failing as President and the US is in danger of sliding into a military dictatorship, says Gore Vidal, the American essayist and intellectual.
In an exclusive interview with The Times, Vidal, 83, reveals that he regrets switching his allegiance from Hillary Clinton to Mr Obama during last year’s campaign to secure the Democratic presidential nomination.
I think the greater failure will be Obama being a one termer. Now can we go on to more pleasant topics?

This is something that has been in the back of my mind since I saw the video of David William Hedrick, a disabled Marine Corps veteran, speak out in Brian Baird's town hall this summer. It was on Fox, too, but I first saw it on Atlas Shrugs: http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2009/08/town-hall-pantheon-hall-of-famer-semper-fi-fascists.html
Anyway, he doesn't mention a military coup, but he pointedly states that he took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign AND domestic. I got goosebumps listening to him. And I "got it."
This post echoes the thoughts I've been having since that day, and I do believe that the military will have to step in if BO continues a course that they feel violates, undermines, or in any way threatens the Constitution. Honestly, that is their sworn duty, and our military, I am proud to say, take their duty very very seriously. Even David Hedrick, no longer in active service, understands that his oath does not die when he leaves the military, that's not how it works.
I have little, no, I have NO doubt, that if it comes down to it, our military will meet their duty, fulfill their obligation, and protect and defend the Constitution of the United States by whatever means necessary.
However, I do not agree that this would happen prior to the 2010 elections. Not unless something completely untoward happened, something so arrogant, so offensive, so illegal that they are forced to act. I don't think BO or his cronies are that stupid. I pray not. I do not want to see our country torn apart as something like this would surely do. But I would also stand behind and beside our military in the protection of our Constitution. To the death, if need be.
So. In the meantime, I'm with you, let's keep making noise, let's keep explaining what we want, and let's hope and pray that our government listens to us.
John Perry is an alarmist, he sees conspiracies everywhere.
As a 20 year veteran of the US Navy I'm going to dismiss all these ridiculous 'military coups' rumors as the paranoid fantasies of people who have read too many Tom Clancy novels.
I would say that 98% of all men and women in the service take their oaths to the Constitution seriously. The President, regardless of his political party, is the Commander in Chief and we obey him and respect his office.
There is no way anyone in the military today is going to try a 'coup' against the President and, even if they did, those in the military not involved with the coup would turn on them like rabid dogs.
Mr. Perry is delusional.
Obama's discussion of a "national militia every bit as large and well funded as the US military" raised eyebrows.
Why?
Because the military and the police know they would not be willing to take an active hand in suppression of patriotic groups. And the Obama Administration knows it, so the concept was born of a group that swears personal loyalty to Obama (the militia) rather than to the Constitution. It's a potential check on the military not following orders.
ACORN was the ground game for political organizing and along with AmeriCorps, was to be the genesis of that militia. Well, that seems to be coming apart so he won't have the troops loyal to him in the sense that they follow him and him alone.
Will the military turn on Obama? Doubtful under foreseeable circumstances. Obama's advisors are not fools (to spite what we all might think) and their control over the mainstream media (minus Fox), while impressive, is not comprehensive as we've seen this week. The NY Times is now following blogs to get the news...they have an editor assigned anyway.
Shining a light on the situation will tend to resolve it. And it may cause Obama to moderate himself.
A coup would be very bad for America - and would be a last ditch action to prevent a tyrant from doing unthinkable things.
Thank you.
Damn but I wish I could come up with a better comment. But it always seems to be the best comment.
Whoa! I admire our brave military, but I'll take my chances in the voting booth. "We" have the power to change this government by paying attention and electing those who represent our values. Staging a coup to replace a president whose policies we vehemently disagree with is akin to pushing the button, and I don't want to go there.
Fuzzy Slippers:
John Perry's piece was in the extreme. As I said Obama's policies are awful, but not outrageously unlawful. A military coup would have to mean Obama and Washington did something in the absolute extreme, and they ain't going there.
Mkoty88:
Of course Perry is delusional. He is acting like Obama turned the US over to China. I cannot see the military taking over for political disputes. Serious threats to the nation, maybe, but politics no.
BTW, it seems Gore Vidal shares Perry's delusion.
Exactly as I said, Clifton, I don't think they're that stupid. If they ever did have visions of totalitarian leadership, the events of the past few months have surely shown that this would not be possible.
LL:
I never thought Obama's national militia idea would work. That sort of thing only works in extremely poor countries where joining such an organization provides an escape from crushing poverty. No such conditions exist here.
While checks and balances create an avenue for a military take over, it would be an extreme last ditch effort to stop an outrageous overreach by government.
Therefore, ain't gonna happen.
Aunt Amelia: Welcome :-)
One Ticked Chick:
We" have the power to change this government by paying attention and electing those who represent our values
Exactly and it still works too. Plus, a military coup would spell a breakdown to the rule of law, once that happened could the rule of law ever work again?
While he blogs unpaid at Newsmax, John Perry worked for the LBJ and Carter Administrations, plus Democratic Florida Governor LeRoy Collins.
But what we have here isn't left and right between Perry and Vidal. It's left and further left pushing fears of a coup in order to stigmatize the right.
Fantastic post. My husband, a Marine officer with 29 years in service, remarked shortly after the election that too many Americans have the cart before the horse: they see themselves as Republicans or Democrats BEFORE they see themselves as Americans.
Regardless of what one may think of this administration, no responsible American should want to see its violent overthrow and the ensuing decay of the rule of law. In a way, I think a large number of Americans no longer have faith in anything: not God, nor the rule of law, nor the fundamental good will of their fellow citizens. This is what happens when individualism trumps everything else; we have no allegiance to anything larger than ourselves and trust vanishes.
The historical example of the military removing a socialist president is Salvatore Allende of Chile. He was deposed in 1973 after causing massive failure of the economy.
Back in March I wrote an article called "Is Barack Obama the Next Salvatore Allende?" It is along the same lines as the Perry article.
http://saberpoint.blogspot.com/2009/03/is-barack-obama-new-salvatore-allende.html
A military coup is possible, but not very probable -- unless Obama ruins the economy a lot worse than it is now.
Clifton - This is a fascinating discussion and something that I was considering wrting about as well, I just wanted to read and think more about it. As Stogie above says,(Hi Stogie), a coup is highly unlikely. There isn't any reason, however, that we can't have this discussion. We just should be sure that it doesn't distract us from protesting everything that we can stop right now.
Only half way through Mr. Perry's article, I already had a list of five major errors in his knowledge of history and the military.
perry sounds depressed. i think zoloft may be in order.
excellent post.
Bob:
Thanks for the info, I am going to look into this Perry guy.
Cassandra:
they see themselves as Republicans or Democrats BEFORE they see themselves as Americans.
Exactly, but there is hope, look at the reaction to Polanski (save the Hollywood crowd) there are still things we can agree on.
no responsible American should want to see its violent overthrow and the ensuing decay of the rule of law
Exactly, rule of law is the very foundation of this nation. A coup would permanently damage that.
This is what happens when individualism trumps everything else; we have no allegiance to anything larger than ourselves and trust vanishes.
Perfect point again. Americans have started adopting a culture where the individual is final source for defining morality. As such each individual is free to make all kinds of excuses to avoid thinking of themselves as a bad person. In short, we need religion.
Stogie:
I am going to check out that post, will give you a comment there.
LCR:
While it is an upsetting topic to contemplate, it does make for intense discussion. You are correct that we should not dwell on the topic long, because if feeds into the left's hysteria.
@eloh:
No surprise there, Perry was being deliberately inflammatory and now the left can feed their worst fears.
namaste:
Agreed, this is a very unpleasant topic.
Fuzzy Slippers:
You are correct, bringing totalitarian regime to America would be near impossible. Americans are like wild mustangs, we don't take well to the lead.
This topic is all over the internet; everyone, on both sides, is talking about it. The comments sections are, as usual, lively. With everyone blaming the other side for "starting it." The left, predictably saying that the right is "pushing" for it and therefore all guilty of treason.
Anyway, some interesting discussions at Hotair, Wizbang, and ThinkProgress if you're interested. If not, I can understand why not (it sounds like you rather regret posting it in the first place?). I tend to enjoy debate and dialogue about anything and everything, but I forget sometimes that not everyone lives in their head like I do (I blame my academic background for that. And a rather vivid and active imagination. :P).
I think, too, that it's important to note that no one is thinking of actually over-throwing BO without damn good reason. That's not the point of the article here, it's what would happen if HE tried a coup. It'd be a counter-coup, a reaction not an action, and certainly not an outright grab for power from him just because we don't like him or agree with his policies. We vote people out of office in this country, and most people know, appreciate, and are grateful for that.
Great post!
C-CS
I can't see it happening unless something really bad goes down to cause STHF. And if that happens we're screwed either way.
Like you said Clifton,"Americans are like wild mustangs, we don't take well to the lead." and it would turn into complete anarchy if a military coup happened, no matter how well intentioned.
Not only would the average American take it as an afront to their liberty, but every fringe group on both sides would use it to stir the pot for an all out civil war.
We may not like and agree with our elected officials but they are duly elected. The ballot box is how we throw the bums out.
Clifton,
I read the Vidal story. Perry is delusional but Vidal should be institutionalized! It's a shame too for I enjoyed his book on Lincoln.
Mike
Fuzzy:
Nope I did not get tired of the topic, just was a little concerned we might be feeding the worry warts on the left.
Think Progress had interesting discussion? Who would have thunk. BTW, did you see Saber Point's (Stogie) take on it?
Voting out bad apples is our method of choice, but our founding fathers did give us tools in an emergency.
Carol-CS
Thanks
Mkotyk88:
How the left claims that Gore is an intellectual is beyond me, that made simply trades in second hand knowledge. Total nut case.
Chris W:
Like you said Clifton,"Americans are like wild mustangs, we don't take well to the lead." and it would turn into complete anarchy if a military coup happened, no matter how well intentioned.
Rule of Law is the glue that keeps it all together. A coup would severely damage that.
"While he blogs unpaid at Newsmax, John Perry worked for the LBJ and Carter Administrations, plus Democratic Florida Governor LeRoy Collins.
But what we have here isn't left and right between Perry and Vidal. It's left and further left pushing fears of a coup in order to stigmatize the right."
Bob: The piece had the air of a FALSE FLAG op. Its take-own by NewsMax was rapid suggesting there were editorial concerns there along those lines.
Could Axelrod and Emanuel caused such an agitprop piece be fed to the right blogosphere in order for Obama to have the excuse to use the civilian security apparatus to quietly purge high rank military officers not particularly enthralled with him or his ideology???
It makes for an interesting hypothetical and y'all know how much we lawyers love those.
i belive we suport our troops and they will suport america, and the constitution, and as for a coup, i hope it dosn`t come to that. but i was also concerned when obama said he wanted a civilian army just as strong as the military,i wondered where could he possibly find one?and wondered why would he want one anyway.AND GOD WILLING THIS IS AMERICA,HOME OF THE FREE,AND OF THE BRAVE AND FOREVER MAY HER FLAG WAVE WITH THE TRUE COLORS OF RED WHITE AND BLUE.
