"Right", Said Fred! Fred Thompson Backs a Conservative Over GOP Nominee

From The Hill:

Fred Thompson spurns GOP special election nominee

By Aaron Blake - 09/28/09 11:27 AM ET

Former GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson just announced he's backing the Conservative Party candidate in the special election in New York's 23rd district.

In the latest sign that GOP state Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava could have trouble on her right flank, the former senator from Tennessee is backing Doug Hoffman over his own party's nominee.

"Doug is a conservative, who understands that our freedom is our greatest strength, that life is a precious gift, and that getting back to our founding principles will ensure our nation's security and prosperity for us and for our children and grandchildren," Thompson said in an e-mail from his political action committee, FredPAC. The e-mail includes a link to a page for donations to Hoffman's campaign.

The conservative Club for Growth has also toyed with backing Hoffman over Scozzafava, releasing a poll last week that showed an even race.

One wonders if some other conservative Republican icons might get involved on Hoffman's behalf. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee sure hasn't been afraid to ruffle feathers.

It is good to see someone stand up for real conservatives. The GOP seems hell bent of digging up mushy middle of the road RINOs, despite the fact that it is conservatives who are effectively slowing Obama’s hard left agenda.

Opposing the GOP’s crummy RINO candidates during the primary is the way to go. The GOP stands to gain from the backlash against Democrats, so we might as well stack the deck with real conservatives. Otherwise we risk replacing Congress with a new one that still embraces the same wrong-headed ideals.

As to wondering what other Republican icon would get involved on Hoffman’s behalf, how come the Hill chooses Huckabee when Sarah Palin clearly has far more pull?

I agree. The current RINO trend is a sad acquiescence to a trend spawned by anger over a long war, a collapsing economy, and some bad SNL jokes. Good to see some of the "establishment" Repubs acknowledging the concerns of the base. This Euro-socialist administration and legislature are trying to fundamentally change the way this country does business, and it is being taken far too lightly by far too many people, particularly those we've elected to represent our concerns.

I hope there are more like Thompson and Palin out there!

Palin promised, in her resignation speech: And I'll work hard for others who still believe in free enterprise and smaller government; strong national security for our country and support for our troops; energy independence; and for those who will protect freedom and equality and LIFE... I'll work for and campaign for those PROUD to be American, and those who are INSPIRED by our ideals and won't deride them.

I WILL support others who seek to serve, in or out of office, for the RIGHT reasons, and I don't care what party they're in or no party at all. Inside Alaska - or Outside Alaska.

It is time to forget party lines and look at value lines, isn't it?

I agree. This RINO trend must stop. Fred's got gumption. I believe that he has made the correct choice. A conservative will help bring this country back to its rightful place, or restore its values and principles. WE can't just keep on voting in GOP candidates just because their in the GOP. WE need candidates who are conservatives, believe in the constitution, and are willing to listen, and stand up for the people.

Hopefully Thompson will start a trend. Far too many in the GOP leadership seem to be content with winning back the Congress by default rather than giving the people what they want.

I think you may have just wrote the campaign slogan for 2012!

I totally agree. I think after 2012, conservative must seriously consider parting ways with the GOP.

I have to confess that I'm pretty disappointed in all of the potentials for a 2012 GOP nomination; we need someone really stellar to stand up against BO. Someone like Reagan. Where is he? Or she? What about you, Clifton?

Ever since attending my first Tea Party, I had this feeling that an everyday person might rise from the group to become a 2012 grassroots candidate. This is because the dislike in Washington is so palpable.

That person ain't me though. I suffer BS very poorly and have a bad habit of dropping F-bombs! Although I would give my right arm to debate Obama. I would tear the bark off that man in a debate.

Over at Smart Girl Politics, we are discussing the possibility of a "real person" running in 2012. I think that's just what we need, and one of the great appeals of Sarah Palin.

I'd back you! I know that we can do a lot with the internet to help bridge the money gap that a real person candidate would be faced with in running against a career politician. It can be done.

We need someone who suffers BS poorly, wouldn't you say? And if f-bomb dropping is the only "negative," you're solid gold. Heck, I just want to see you tear the bark off BO! :)
