Say What? Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize??????

From The New York Times:

WASHINGTON — President Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” a stunning honor that came less than nine months after he made United States history by becoming the country’s first African-American president.
The award, announced in Oslo by the Nobel Committee while much of official Washington — including the president — was still asleep, cited in particular the president’s efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

“He has created a new international climate,” the committee said.
This has to be the most absurd thing I have ever seen in all my life.  Obama has done absolutely nothing to earn the award and his efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons has all the potential for an epic failure.

I think the world is trying to mock Obama. They know what a big narcissist he is and are playing on that big time.  If I were Obama I would find a very polite way to say "Thanks, but no thanks" to this award.  With three years to go in his presidency and oh so much to go wrong, this award has the ability to make Obama an international joke and America a complete laughingstock for electing such an unqualified man.

Obama for the sake of American pride and your own self image, turn this award down!

Let me hear your thoughts, do you think Obama should turn down the Nobel Prize?

I give you back your own words; "America a complete laughingstock for electing such an unqualified man."

I understand the "hope" so many people were feeling and many still feel. Dang, I "hope" everyday that people like you and me are just plain "full of it". That Obama and his buddies have America's best interests at heart. But everyday a feeling of hopelessness sweeps over me.

We were the "Americans", we gave our blood to rescue the oppressed...who will come to our aid?

I don't think the rest of the world has a firm grasp on what our freedoms mean to us and want to join in a celebration of our descent into socialism.

I must say, I think what they did to Kissinger back in 1973 was a lot worse.

It's not a "peace-peace" prize, it's just a peace prize.

Best.

It is pathetic that the Nobel committe chose to give the Peace price to someone who has done nothing to deserve it. There are far more worthy candidates for the Peace Prize.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for him to turn it down. This was awarded to tie his hands militarily.

My thoughts exactly. It is an irrelevent award, by an irrelevent country, to an narcissitic egomaniac pResident.

who cares?

I can't imagine that he will turn it down. He's ego is too big though if he did so, it would be a tremendous boost to him But really why would they think he remotely deserves it?

The Nobel Commission and it's "peace prize" are a joke. Any organization that awards a peace prize to Palestinian terrorist Yasser Arafat, whose contribution to peace was murdering innocent Israeli citizens, can't be taken seriously.

ABSOLUTELY he should turn it down. but he won't. what garbage! i can't believe what is happening with this one mistake of a president.

my guess is the next recipient of the nobel peace prize will be paris hilton.

Hmmm. Paris Hilton? You're probably right. Bill Nye will get the prize for physics.

Clifton,

All I have to say is Whisky tango Foxtrot?!

If the Nobel Committee is giving prizes on those who hate Bush (a man who rid the world of one dictator [which the Democrats still defend] and One theocracy [which Obama seems to want to give back]), heck, when will they give the Peace prize to Hamas?

President Obama was nominated when he first took the job, last i checked the Dictators around the world are still crushing their poeple. See Iran for instance.

G-d help us all.

He should absolutely turn it down. Of course, he thinks far too highly of himself for that. He probably believes the empty rhetoric the Nobel Committee tried to explain their selection with.

@eloh said...

Well, he just accepted it. Big Shocker...

No way he would have turned it down. But should he? I don't know. Depends on what the international ramifications of that would mean.

It should have been awarded to a more deserving person in the first place.

next question is "how will this play in the next presidential elections?"

Nah Namaste, I think the next Nobel recipient will be Marge Simpson. She is appearing on the cover of Playboy next month, you know. She will be the first cartoon character to do it, FINALLY shattering the glass ceiling.

Yes, the Nobel Prize for Marge Simpson! A make-believe achievement award for a make believe person. We will have come full circle.

Apparently anyone with a happy or nice thought towards anyone else in the world is able to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It's becoming more and more a joke rather than an honor.

Yes... he should turn it down. From what I have read the nominations started September 2008 and had to be turned in by February 2009. That means the nominations were received for a man who hasn't done anything yet. He didn't do anything great before he was president and certainly didn't do anything amazing during the first few days of being in office.

This is a joke... not a joke in that it didn't happen... a joke in that THEY are setting this man up at every turn to never be accountable for his own failings.

the committee that gives out Nobel Peace prizes can decide on whomever they please, so it's pretty much impossible to criticize Obama for winning one

I agree, I believe he should have turned it down! I am shocked at the fact that this man was chosen for peace prize when his actions are clearly headed in the opposite direction
