Sotomayor’s Confirmation: One big diversion

The excessive news coverage of Judge Sonia Sotomayor is a big fat diversion from more important news. For two main reasons, the media should be focusing on other major events.

First, Sotomayor will not change the balance on the Supreme Court. She is a liberal and she will be replacing a liberal. Nothing loss, nothing gained.

Second, she has the votes! While Republicans gave her a hard once over (as well as they should), Lindsey Graham’s words ring true, baring a meltdown she is in. So unless Sotomayor flat out says she hates whitey, any scuffs she gets from Republicans will be papered over with praises from Democrats and the Democrats will use their numbers to confirm her.

Therefore, why can’t the media just give us a few highlights at the end of the day and then the final votes in the end?

Meanwhile they could focus more time on the real important stories of the day:
