Steele: Blacks don’t have a reason to vote for the GOP

I remember a few weeks back, when I was rapping Michael Steele over the lesbian bondage club fiasco; one commenter came to Steele’s defense and said that Steel was good for helping to attract blacks to the GOP. I said that might be true if Steele did not constantly step on the message. Here we go again:
"You really don't have a reason to, to be honest -- we haven't done a very good job of really giving you one. True? True," Republican National Chairman Michael Steele told 200 DePaul University students Tuesday night. [SNIP]
"We have lost sight of the historic, integral link between the party and African-Americans," Steele said. "This party was co-founded by blacks, among them Frederick Douglass. The Republican Party had a hand in forming the NAACP, and yet we have mistreated that relationship. People don't walk away from parties, Their parties walk away from them.
"For the last 40-plus years we had a 'Southern Strategy' that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, 'Bubba' went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton."
Do you see that first line I highlighted? That is going to be blasted and broadcast any and everywhere by the MSM. That will be the only message that the black community will ever hear. Even though Steele went on to elaborate somewhat, that first sentence will undo whatever advances he had hoped to make.

It is almost like Steele doesn’t comprehend that when it comes to race and the GOP, the left has set up an effective Catch 22. When the GOP or the right makes any attempts at reaching out to the black community, it is immediate called false or a token gesture, when the GOP or right fails to make any outreach it is called racism. Knowing this dynamic, it is crucial not to play the game and certainly do not feed the left’s stereotypes.

Saying blacks don’t have a reason to vote for Republicans epic fail on Steele's part. Just off the top of my head I could have thought of four reasons:

  1. After decades of voting for Democrats, the problems facing major problems facing the black community still persist.
  2. Voting monolithically for one party robs you of your political voice.
  3. The Democrats tax and spend policies destroy the much needed business opportunities in the black community.
  4. Republicans support vouchers for schools, so your children can flee failing schools today.
Michael Steele’s problem is that he thinks of himself as some media mastermind, when in fact the man is a rank amateur. He needs to step away from the spotlight and get down to working on the problems of the RNC. If he cannot do that, then step aside for some more capable. These are serious times and we cannot afford such foolishness.

Clifton, While Mr. Steel might not be the best candidate to salvage the Republican party, I believe that patriots like you, Allen West, Lloyd Marcus, Herman Cain, Michelle Malkin, et al, are the most likely individuals to effectively focus attention on the issues most important to the survival of our republic. The Democratic Party has done a masterful job, in collusion with the MSM, of marginalizing white Republicans (or anyone else daring to oppose the Progressive 'vision' for America) as racist, bigots, and... (fill in the pejorative of your choice). Despite this, there are many, like me, that will not go quietly into the future that the Progressives would wish for us. Having you and the others in the list above on the right side of history makes clear why you and others have been singled out for such vitriol as only the Left can spew. Thanks so much for your excellent blog and your willingness to take the abuse that I am certain you encounter each day. Keep up the excellent work.

Clifton, you should seriously consider running for office. You'd be fantastic!

Steele's just not getting it. I think he won't get it and needs to go. This is pretty much the last straw for me with regards to him. :(

In regards to Michael Steele, in the words of Hank Hill (King of the Hill): "Just when I thought you went and said the stupidest thing, you keep talking."

Angie, "Good Grief" was my first reponse also. Steele just keeps digging himself a deeper hole. Somebody needs to tell him to just stop talking.

He's beginning to embarass me.

I had such high hopes for Steele. I really thought he could be such a benefit, but it seems that he is actually a liability.

I was hoping he could get the message out that the Republican party embraces everyone and dispell the misconception that Republicans are a bunch of racists. The things he says and does are only doing the opposite.

The GOP admits to the "Southern Strategy". Did the "Southern Strategy" really happen?

I have seen it credited to Nixon, and 40 years goes back to 1970. In 68, Nixon didn't carry the south. In 72, Nixon carried every state but one. I don't think Nixon used a southern strategy or even needed to use one to be competative.

Did Reagan use a southern strategy? The evidence for this is that he said "State's Rights" mostly. I still believe the solution is State's rights in this country. If we solved problems in 50 different ways instead of one big wrong way we would find out what works and what doesn't. Why not let Romeny care go for a decade and see the benefits and flaws before making everyone adopt it. I think letting the states tackle their own problems in different ways is the strength of the original setup.

Was George W. Bush taking part in a southern strategy? This 40 years nonsense that Steele is talking about doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know why that Steele is admitting to something that I don't think even exists. I wouldn't want anything to do with a party that had such a strategy for 40 years, and if he really believes that whey is Michael Steele a conservative and why has he been a conservative?

Perhaps Mrr. Steele might want to flesh out the 'historic, integral link' rather than apologizing for not doing so. The left is going to take shots at him anyway, so why not use the history to give them something to really yelp about?
