Silly ramblings from a white liberal: Joy Behar on Black Friday

Oh brother! I know that The View is not a show known for its intellectual heft, but this scene takes the cake. Kudos to Whoopie for not buying into Joy’s foolishness and correctly pointing out that the word “black” is used to describe store’s balance sheets. Someone needs to tell Joy Behar that just because a word or phrase contains the word “black” doesn’t mean that it automatically pertains to black people. So words and phrases like “blackmail” and “black sheep” are not racist.

If white people don’t get all bent out of shape over the phrase “White Sale”, then I think us black folk should be cool with the phrase “Black Friday”. There is a huge chasm between racial sensitivity and utter foolishness and Joy clearly crosses that chasm here.

Newsbusters makes an important observation about Joy's selective sensitivity:
It's somewhat ironic Behar would be concerned about offending sensibilities in this harmless use of the word black to describe the day of an event when she herself has had little regard for the sensitivities of personalities that tend to fall right of center on the ideological spectrum. Behar recently noted the past addictions of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and George W. Bush as marks of conservatism and has repeatedly taken shots at the intellect of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Yep, a few more years of sensitivity training for Joy is in order.

I would only get mad if I heard "Houndstooth Sale". Man, that fries me!
Joking aside, it's a knee-jerk reaction. Standard political correctness stuff. No thinking required.
